Barron ends JCU’s winning streak
BARRON Trinity has ended JCU Mariners’ long-standing dominance in rugby union, with a stunning 23-17 victory during round six last weekend.

Barron Trinity handed the reigning powerhouse its first defeat in years.
In a match played with finals-like intensity, Barron Trinity delivered a fearless performance built on physical defence and composure under pressure.
JCU entered the match carrying one of the competition’s longest unbeaten streaks, but Barron Trinity rose to the occasion and matched the Mariners in every area of the game.
The home side controlled key moments late in the contest, defending repeated attacking raids from JCU before sealing a famous six-point victory.
The win is set to send shockwaves through the FNQ Rugby competition and could prove a turning point in the 2026 season as teams look to challenge Mariners’ long-held dominance.
Bulls head coach David Brooks said he was proud.
“This is one of my proudest wins, the players had themselves an absolute game, this win gives us something to build off going forward,” he said.
Southside also secured an important victory, edging out the Mudcrabs 22-20 in another thrilling encounter.
The match remained tight from start to finish, with both sides trading momentum throughout the afternoon before Southside held on in the closing stages to claim the narrow two-point win.
In the reserve’s competition, JCU opened the day with a hard-fought 26-17 victory over Barron Trinity.
The Mariners showed their class through strong ball movement and disciplined defence, overcoming a determined Barron outfit that stayed within striking distance for much of the contest.
The Tablelands Reds also continued their strong form in the reserves grade, defeating the Cairns Sharks 31-12.
The Reds controlled the tempo throughout the afternoon, using their forward pack to dominate field position before capitalising out wide with several well-worked tries.
Despite moments of resistance from the Sharks, the Reds proved too polished across the full 80 minutes.
With several close contests and a major upset highlighting the weekend, round six showcased the growing competitiveness of FNQ Rugby in 2026.
