The creative space at 51 Lake Street had been facing an uncertain future as its lease approached its end, with organisers preparing to close after more than a decade of providing artists with a place to create, exhibit and connect.

However, support from the property’s owners has given the organisation what it describes as a lifeline, allowing Artists at Work to remain open and continue serving the local arts community. To mark the occasion, Artists at Work and the Cairns Art Society will present the AAW Phoenix Exhibition, highlighting themes of resilience, creativity and renewal.

Organisers are inviting artists, supporters and members of the public to attend the opening night celebration on Friday 5 June at 5pm at Artists at Work, 51 Lake Street, Cairns CBD.

In a statement promoting the exhibition, organisers said: “Just when it seemed our story was coming to an end, a new chapter began.

“After more than a decade of providing artists with a place to create, exhibit and connect, Artists at Work faced an uncertain future as our Lake Street lease approached its end. We were preparing to close our doors.

“Then something unexpected happened. Thanks to the incredible support of our property owners, AAW has been given a lifeline and the opportunity to continue as Cairns’ working artist studio and gallery.

“To celebrate this rebirth, we invite you to the AAW Phoenix Exhibition – a showcase of resilience, creativity and renewal.”

The exhibition opening will give visitors an opportunity to meet participating artists, view artworks and learn more about the gallery and studio’s future.

The event marks a significant moment for Artists at Work as it continues operating in Cairns, with organisers thanking supporters and property owners.
