African community flourishing in Cairns
HARMONY week is a time to celebrate multicultural diversity, and in Cairns that diversity is flourishing, with the Cairns African Association welcoming record numbers of members in the past few years. March is also the month we celebrate the achievement of women worldwide.
As Anna Jones explains “Women’s Empowerment works on the premise that when you empower women, you empower the whole community, and the association aims to harness the existing skills of members and channel these into meaningful contributions in the community.”
To celebrate and strengthen women’s contributions in the community, the Cairns African Association is holding an International Women’s Day event on Saturday, March 27. The event will be held at the Serbian Club on Greenslopes Street from 2 to 6pm, with African cultural activities and traditional food, with a host of community associations also invited to join in the celebrations. Entry is by gold coin donation.
“Through cultural events we also enable non-African members of the Cairns community to engage with and learn about African culture,” said Ms Jones.
“In collaboration with partners such as Centacare, Maraway, Salvation Army and many others, the African Association has programs run by volunteers providing a support network for African migrants.”
The association was started in 2013, and currently has representation from over 13 countries across Africa.
