AFL and Bupa join forces to help Indigenous students
AFL Cape York has secured support from Bupa Villages and Aged Care for its game development program, aimed at helping young people build skills both on and off the field.

The partnership focuses on promoting active, healthy lifestyles while fostering education, leadership and community connection among young Indigenous Australians from across Far North Queensland, Cape York and the Torres Strait.
Bupa’s sponsorship will help AFL Cape York expand its reach and continue delivering programs designed to keep young people active, connected and engaged in their education and communities.
Bupa Villages and Aged Care head of operational support Andrew Thornton said the organisation was proud to support the program.
Mr Thornton said young people boarding at AFL Cape York House while pursuing their education in Cairns would have opportunities to work in Bupa care homes to broaden their experience.
“Our partnership gives students the chance to work in our care homes while completing their studies, gaining real-world experience and qualifications they can take back to their communities. It’s a privilege to play a small part in helping them build their careers,” he said.
AFL Cape York general manager Rick Hanlon said support from Bupa contributed to positive outcomes for young people. “Support like Bupa’s goes a long way for us and for the young people in our programs,” he said. “We see every day how sport can change lives, helping kids build confidence, stay engaged at school and feel proud of where they come from.”
