Written and directed by Kathy Carruthers, the production follows a group of theatre enthusiasts trying to save musical theatre after visitors from the future claim artificial intelligence has wiped it out.

Presented over three weekends from Friday 31 July to Saturday 15 August, the season includes six theatre restaurant performances followed by two show-only performances.

Mrs Carruthers said the production continued the Cairns Choral Society’s tradition of creating original works for local audiences.

“Time Step blends comedy, live music and theatrical mayhem into a musical mockumentary that invites audiences to imagine a future in which musical theatre has disappeared and join a bunch of mismatched theatre tragics in their quest to save it,” said Mrs Carruthers.

The production features an original script by Mrs Carruthers and a cast of 40 local and talented performers.

According to the Cairns Choral Society, audiences can expect a mix of well-known songs from stage musicals alongside original music written for the production.

The society says the show celebrates the creativity, talent and humour that have become hallmarks of its theatre restaurant productions.

The nine lead performers are John Margetts, Rachael Fullston, Linc Jenkin, Adam Nash, Claire MacKenzie, Emily Hughes, Lara Carruthers, Georgia Shaw and Maddy Kincade.

The theatre restaurant performances include guests’ choice of meal from Coral Coast Catering, while audiences can also attend show-only performances during the final weekend. Tickets for the show-only performances start from $40.

Founded in 1923, the Cairns Choral Society is one of Queensland’s oldest community theatre companies and continues to produce concerts, cabarets and major musicals in Far North Queensland.
