3000 athletes at Ironman

MORE than 3000 athletes from 54 countries will converge on Tropical North Queensland this weekend as Cairns Airport Ironman Cairns celebrates its 15th anniversary.

The event returns on Sunday 14 June with competitors taking part in either the Ironman or Ironman 70.3 triathlon races, attracting athletes from around Australia and overseas, as well as leading professional triathletes from across the region.

Ironman spokeswoman Leanna Ali said the milestone event was generating excitement among organisers and competitors.

“We can’t wait to see more than 3000 athletes take part in Cairns Airport Ironman Cairns on Sunday,” said Ali.

“This year is a special one for us as we celebrate the 15th running of Ironman Cairns and there is a real sense of excitement and pride from everyone involved in the event as we reach this milestone.

“It’s great to see so many athletes returning to Cairns in 2026, with 54 countries set to be represented.

“This will be an event to remember and our team is looking forward to welcoming all of the athletes across the finish line as they achieve their goals on race day.”

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the city was looking forward to hosting competitors and visitors once again.

“We are so excited to welcome the Ironman to Cairns again in 2026. It is such an important event in our calendar, and we know how much all the teams enjoy coming up to Far North Queensland to compete in the beautiful environment,” she said.
