The Innisfail Bypass planning project will aim to improve the safety and efficiency of the Bruce Highway.

Planning investigations include reviewing options for the north-south bypass route’s future corridor, as well as options for improved connectivity between the Palmerston Highway and Mourilyan Harbour Road.

The planning project, which Jacobs will complete, is expected to start later in the year and take around 18 months to complete. Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the project aimed to increase road safety.

“It comes as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s four-year $1.6 billion road and transport infrastructure investment in Far North Queensland, which includes projects like the $230 million Townsville Ring Road stage five and $97 million Burdekin Bridge upgrade,” Minister Bailey said.

“This planning project will help us find the best alignment for Innisfail’s future bypass corridor, which will support the freight network and make road use safer.

“It will also investigate how the road’s flood immunity can be improved, which would really make a difference in the lives of locals.

“This project will help road users get home sooner and safer and is a huge win for Innisfail residents.”

The project is jointly funded by the Australian ($7.2m) and Queensland ($1.8m) governments. Additional stages of the Innisfail Bypass are subject to future funding.
