Health Promotion Officer at BreastScreen Queensland Cairns Service, Sandra Peut, urged women in Tully and the surrounding region to take advantage of the truck’s visit and book in for a free breast screen.

“A breast screen, or screening mammogram, is the best way to detect breast cancer early, often before any changes can be seen or felt by a woman or her doctor,’’ Ms Peut said.

“However, if a woman does experience any breast symptoms, she should always consult her doctor as soon as possible.’’ Ms Peut said the risk of breast cancer increased with age.

“That’s why we especially encourage women aged 50 to 74 to have a breast screen every two years, as this is the age group that benefits most from screening,” she said.

“However, women aged over 40 are eligible to join the free BreastScreen Queensland Program.

“On average, one in seven Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Early detection could save your life, so it’s vital to keep up-to-date with important health checks.”

The Mobile BreastScreen Service is currently located at the Innisfail Showgrounds, before its visit to Tully in mid-August. A doctor’s referral is not required to attend the Mobile Screening Service.
