North Queensland won all three matches last weekend, comfortably defeating South Queensland.

While the wins were not overwhelming, the margin was decisive enough to highlight the team’s strength.

Two Cairns players were selected for the Queensland Country team.

Tom King led the tournament with nine wickets as a medium-fast left-arm bowler.

Marcus Berryman also made the cut, taking seven wickets to finish as the second-highest wicket-taker.

First-grade matches also showcased local talent.

Rovers defeated Mareeba, with Henry King, Tom King’s brother, taking four wickets for 15 runs. Dayne Margiotta scored 62 runs for Mareeba, making him one of the game’s standout performers.

On the women’s side, three Cairns players travelled to Brisbane to compete in the North Queensland versus South Queensland series.

Meg McCartney, Alana Romano and Abby Toshach represented the region in a three-game competition at Tansey, which begins this Friday.

The men’s tournament was played at Griffith Park in Cairns. Organisers said the event provided valuable exposure for regional players and a platform to progress to higher levels of competition.

Cairns Cricket CEO Daniel Freebody said the weekend highlighted the strength of local talent.

“We’ve got some real standout players from Cairns making their mark,” he said.

“It’s exciting to see our young cricketers performing so well and being recognised at the state level.”

With Queensland Country selections confirmed and the women’s series underway, Cairns players are poised for more opportunities to showcase their skills.
