Making a splash

Although stinger nets are out and beach patrols are winding back, it’s still a busy schedule for North Queensland Surf Life Savers.

A large contingent attended the Northern Australian Championships earlier this month in Mackay with the Cairns Surf Life Savers Club returning triumphant after three gruelling days of competition.

The Cairns Club, based at Palm Cove competed against the best surf athletes from Harvey Bay to Ellis Beach winning every division, Pool Rescue, Junior, Senior, Masters and the coveted Overall Champions for the event.

Cairns Surf Club have dominated the sport for the past decade or more, this year’s Overall win is the 10th year in succession Cairns have finished on top.

The Championships featured all events including beach flags and sprints, belt rescue, ski, Surf Ironman and Ironwoman events. The competition also features an IRB competition, surf boat competition, pool rescue competition and Champion Lifesaver.

Seven members from Cairns Surf Club have been named in the Queensland Country team set to compete on the Gold Coast in late November. Representing the region are Under 13 Summer Tottman, Briarna Wilkinson, Logan Stevens, Under 15 Zara Stevens, Bryce Menzies, Under 17 Jackson Rogers and Murray Colbridge.

There were also 5 Age Champions at the recent event. Summer Tottman U13, Jackson Rogers U17, Alisha Davy Open, Helen Leicht 50+ and Peter Lade 60+.

Keeping their pool rescue skills honed the Cairns Surf Club attended the NQB Pool Rescue Championships held November 14 at Marlin Coast Pool.

80 Competitors from Mission beach, Etty Bay, cairns and Ellis Beach attended. The Pool Rescue events included Obstacle Swim, Brick Carry, Patient Tow and team Relay events.
