Cairns Cars Dealer Principal Alan Ren said this was a very exciting moment for Cairns Cars.

“Selecting a brand is a bit like dating,” Mr Ren said.

“You have to find a brand that fits your organisational values, so Volvo being a Swedish brand, they’ve come to me as very humble, honest, and ethical, and those values fit with my brand.

“They are also very forward-thinking. For example, most people may know that they invented the three-point seatbelt that we use in our cars today.

“But people may not know that they had the opportunity to patent it and make it exclusive to their brand, but back in 1959, they decided it was too important, and they should share it with everyone.”

Mr Ren said they had been getting queries on Volvo even prior to the announcement.

“We haven’t announced it to the public yet; we’ve just had website presence,” he said.

“But we’ve been getting a significant amount of inquiries from the Cairns public on the Volvo brand and the electric cars they have.

“So I’m quite excited.”

The Cairns Cars dealership, which also represents Audi, Skoda, Peugeot, GWM and Haval, will be opening a new temporary showroom for Volvo on the corner of Mulgrave Road and Lyons St in May and a sustainable showroom outfitted with furniture made with recycled materials in October 2022.

Mr Ren said that Volvo’s sustainability goals are part of what he appreciates the most in this partnership.

“Volvo is one of the few brands that has promised to be climate neutral by 2040, so they started to do that by making electric vehicles,” he said.

“In the future, that will reduce greenhouse emissions.

“They already have an extensive line of electric vehicles, but by 2025, which is not far away, they plan to have 50% of their total sales as electric vehicles.

“And then by 2030, 100% of their sales, which is a pretty big call.”

“Living so close to the Great Barrier Reef, I think climate change is something we have to do all we can towards a sustainable future.

“It might cost us more in the short term to invest in those new technologies that help to reduce greenhouse emissions.

“But I think we need to think in the long term,” Mr Ren said.

“I want to be a part of that journey that a brand like Volvo is doing towards that goal.”

With just a few months before Volvo begins its journey in Cairns, Mr Ren said he is most excited about the opportunities that having the brand in Cairns opens up for the community.

“I can’t wait to see a few electric Volvos around town; I think that’s always exciting,” he said.

“And partner different local communities with the brand.

“One thing we’ve already started is that we’ll be working with the art gallery and their upcoming exhibitions with Volvo being their primary supporter; we’re working on small things like that.”

Upcoming vehicle releases from Volvo include the all-electric C40 Recharge, which will be available in the second half of 2022.

Volvo Cars Cairns is open for servicing. Cairns residents interested in a Volvo vehicle can register now with Mr Ren via sales@cairnscars.com to be one of the first in Cairns to test drive Cairns’ latest luxury automotive offering.
