Refugee Week

Next week, Cassowary Coast Regional Council is celebrating Refugee Week, acknowledging the rich cultures and shared values of freedom that make our community a great place to live.

Australia has an extensive history of successfully resettling people as refugees and since the end of the Second World War, Australia has accepted more than 930,000 refugees and humanitarian entrants, and we maintain one of the world’s most generous humanitarian programs.

Councillor Trudy Tschui said as Australians we can all be proud of our nation’s commitment to providing a safe home to people whose lives were in crisis - people from war-torn countries—people who had faced persecution and even death.

“We are so lucky to live in such an amazing, safe country and as a whole community, we must ensure all people feel welcome living on the Cassowary Coast.

“This year, Council will hold a Citizenship Ceremony during Refugee Week to celebrate the contributions made by those who have settled in our region through the Humanitarian Program.

“Council is honoured to welcome new citizens to our growing region and are proud of our nation’s commitment to providing a safe home to people in crisis.

“I encourage everyone to celebrate the values that make us proud to call ourselves Australian, including respect for the freedom and dignity of others, the rule of law, democracy and a fair go for all,”

“Council will also raise the Ukrainian Flag during Refugee Week as a symbol of solidarity with the people of Ukraine and everyone affected by the conflict and humanitarian crisis,” said Councillor Tschui.

The Citizenship Ceremony will be held on Wednesday 22 June 2022 at the Innisfail Shire Hall at 10:30am.
