Across the Far North, Councils, sporting groups, communities and businesses will celebrate Australia Day.

Here’s some of the events you can check a=out and participate in:

Cairns:

Cairns Regional Council has four major event planned.

POOL PARTY: Come along and celebrate at Tobruk Memorial Pool on Tuesday. 9am – 12 noon with free entry. There’s games and competitions, prizes to be won, free movie screening, plus the standard sausage sizzle.

Cairns Water Polo Reef Sharks will hold a free come and try event for swimmers of all ages during the Pool Party.

BEACH PARTY:Holloways Beach will come alive between 8am and 11am. The Holloways Beach Markets will be running, food and market stalls, live entertainment along with competition and prizes, oh and a free sausage sizzle.

PARTY IN THE PARK:Gordonvale is not forgotten. From 11am to 2pm Norman Park will celebrate Australia Day. Free sausage sizzle, live music and Aussie themed activities.

CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY:200 very proud new Australians will participate in the biggest ever Australia Citizenship ceremony in Cairns. Hosted at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre.

AWARDS: The 2021 Australia Day Cairns awards will be announced at a special breakfast event on Monday 25 January, at the Pullman International.


KURANDA SCENIC RAILWAY: Local can take advantage of half-price tickets this Australia Day.


PORT DOUGLAS

BARBECUE: Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre will prepare a free barbecue breakfast from 7.30am.

CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY & AWARDS:Douglas Shire Council will host its citizenship ceremony at 9.30am and awards at 11am at the Port Douglas Community Hall - due to COVID restrictions, both events will be restricted to award winners, new citizens and their families and friends.

Council will welcome 28 new citizens from New Zealand, France, Thailand, Germany, Italy, India, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Hungary and the United Kingdom at the citizenship ceremony.


CASSOWARY COAST

POOL PARTIES: Free entry to pools in Innisfail, Mission Beach, Tully and Cardwell. There’s live entertainment, giveaways anjd a barbecue lunch that you can purchase.

INNISFAIL MEMORIAL BATHS:10am – 2pm

MISSION BEACH AQUATIC CENTRE:10am – 4pm

TULLY POOL: 10am – 2pm

CARDWELL POOL: 10am – 4pm

Community groups will be hosting the poolside barbecues lunches across the region.

AWARDS & CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY:Cassowary Coast Regional Council is holding its awards and citizenship ceremony at Innisfail Shire Hall from 9am – tickets must be obtained via www.trybooking.com and no tickets will be available on the door.


TABLELANDS

CRACKING AUSTRALIA DAY PARTY:Hosted at the Dimbulah Community Centre. There will be whip cracking, toad races, a new Tropical Thunder waterslide, dunny cart races and two water castles, along with a thong throwing competition and chocolate pond competition, a fun filled activity packed agenda for the whole family.

MAREEBA:

CITIZENSHIP & AWARDS: Mareeba Shire Council’s citizenship candidates and award nominees will attend ceremonies with their family and friends and Council will get around the COVID restriction problem by live-streaming the event on its Facebook page.
