Since the program’s commencement on May 24, 2022, held in partnership with GPs and Pharmacies, around 650,000 people have received their influenza vaccine.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the extension would allow families to take advantage of the program over school holidays.

“We know that parents may not have had the opportunity to take the family in for their free flu shot; that’s why the next two weeks will be critical,” The Premier said.

“This campaign has already been incredibility successful, and a further two weeks will increase Queensland’s coverage as we hit the peak of winter.

“If you haven’t yet had your vaccination, I urge you to take our offer of a free shot.”

Minister D’Ath said more than 29,000 people in Queensland have tested positive for flu so far this year, resulting in over 3,000 hospitalisations.

“Today (June 30), there are 90 patients in our public hospitals, with five in ICU, who are positive with influenza.

“We’re still early in the flu season, and it’s already proving harsh.

“The rollout has had an excellent response, lifting the state’s flu vaccination rate by more than 12%.

“But we want to protect more Queenslanders, especially families and those vulnerable to influenza.”

Influenza A is the dominant strain in Queensland. The disease is highly contagious and can be life-threatening.

The flu vaccine is recommended annually for anyone over six months of age.
