Council Seeks To Re-Activate Dunk Island Spit
Cassowary Coast Regional Council is seeking tenders for a long term lessee of the Spit area at Dunk Island with tender scheduled to be released on Friday 22 April.
Dunk Island situated only 4km off the coast of Mission Beach is one of the region’s most iconic tourism attractions.
Located within the Great Barrier Reef marine park community and visitors alike are drawn to the many island beaches and rainforest walking trails.
As such, Council recognises the need to invest in activating the main day-visit and camping area of the Spit to meet anticipated tourist demand.
Since repossession of the Spit area last year, Council has commenced upgrades to facilities and appointed a short-term caretaker to manage the campsites and clean amenities.
The appointment of a long term lessee and further activation of the Spit at Dunk Island represents a commercial opportunity for a private investor for up to 30 years.
This lease opportunity aims to re-activate island visitor services at the Spit to complement the greater island experience as a valuable destination spot on the Cassowary Coast.
The four hectare lease area currently comprises of nine camp sites, a camp kitchen and amenities block.
Council has proposed a maximum term of 30 years is available and will seek to review fully funded proposals to ensure the Spit is managed and developed in a sustainable manner.
