A staple of the city of Cairns, the first-ever Cairns Show took place from September 9-11, 1891, with the judging of cattle, pigs, poultry and horse events being the main attractions, and its first show ground was a reserve between James and Thomas Street. 300 people attended the event.

Since then, Cairns Show has been revitalised and relocated due to its popularity until it became what we know today. Cairns Show has kept the tradition alive while promoting the best of our local businesses, produce and agriculture.

Cairns Show president Ian Allen said it was exciting to be celebrating this year’s show after the last two years’ challenges.

“It’s great to be able to celebrate 131 years,” Mr Allen said.

“And we’re fortunate that we will have a lot of sun by Friday and the perfect weather for people to enjoy the Show.

“There is no crowd like the Cairns crowd to surround the community and come out and support their local Show better than any other show in Australia.

“We’re lucky to return with a full program this year.” Mr Allen said that there are many highlights to the 2022 Show.

“We have a new entertainment act in the centre ring, The Rooftop Express Brumby Muster Show, and it’s the first time it’s ever been to Cairns,” he said.

“Returning this year will be the Showtime FMX, a highlight for the younger generation.

“Plus, we have the fireworks for the three nights of the show and the animal exhibits.

“This year, we also have a new ride called The Twister, and it’s the first time it’s been to Cairns.”

The 2022 Cairns Show promises three days full of entertainment and tradition, and Mr Allen said he wanted to encourage the Cairns community to join in the fun and support the local industry.

“I just hope people come and enjoy themselves once they go through the gate,” he said.

“There’s just so much to do and have a look at.

“We try and support as many local businesses as possible, and this is your opportunity to come and support them as well.”
