Visitors to the markets will have the opportunity to join in the free Harmony Day celebrations planned for Tank 3 between 10am and 1pm.

This event is sponsored by Diversicare, Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland and the Cairns Regional Council.

The harmony Day Event provides all Cairns residents with an opportunity to learn and celebrate cultural diversity in our local community.

Organiser of the Harmony Day Events, Marcela Fischer, said the event was as entertaining as it was enlightening and it would not have been possible without the support from a broad-based community organising committee.

“The event showcases emerging and established cultures in Cairns through static displays, craft and food being made and sold, as well as entertaining and exciting performances by local acts,” Ms Fischer said.

“These performances offer insight into the richness of diversity that makes Cairns so great.”

Lisa Ward will open the event as CEO of Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ), Queensland’s peak body for Culturally Diverse Communities.

Ms Ward is ECCQ’s first female CEO.

She is passionate about building the trust and linkages between the community and decision-makers to ensure that different cultural experiences and voices are heard and understood to see positive steps towards a genuinely inclusive society.

The event will also have many community support services with information stalls.

The community can talk with staff at these stalls and receive information about the support and services available to culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

The staff at ECCQ knows that moving to a new country or city can be challenging, especially for people whose first language isn’t English.

The Harmony Day Festival is an excellent opportunity to speak with the providers directly to learn more about how their agency can support them.

Everyone is welcome, so ECCQ wants to invite people from all backgrounds to come along for a free, fun family outing, where browsing the markets and enjoying cultural showcases in Tank 3 are the order of the day.
