Not had your covid jab yet?

It’s not too late!

While the Queensland borders are now open to the rest of Australia thanks to the statewide target of over 80% of eligible residents being reached; Wuchopperen Health Service, Cairns’ primary health care service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, is pulling out all the stops to ramp up the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out and protect its clients said Acting CEO Rachael Ham.

“We’ve been working with community for months now, encouraging everyone eligible to come forward and get vaccinated. And many have – but we’ve still got a long way to go to reach 80% in our community. Across Queensland the rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (First Nations) is still at only 55% fully vaccinated. And that’s not good enough,” said Ms Ham.

“Wuchopperen has held community vaccine events that have seen over 300 people jabbed in a day, held pop up clinics in parks, extended its vaccination clinic opening hours and is now offering home jabbing visits to clients that can’t get into the clinics – but for some, vaccine hesitancy is still an issue in our community, and especially in young people,” she said.

“State-wide data is telling us that over 86% of our clients aged 70 years and over are fully vaccinated – and we’re so happy about that. But it’s our younger mob that we’re now worried about. They’re not getting the message; not only that they can get COVID and it can make them very sick - but that from this Friday 17 December, if they are not vaccinated their movements are about to become very restricted; no movies, sporting events, bars, nightclubs, visiting family in hospital or aged care; and generally hanging out with their vaccinated friends over the holiday period.

“Wuchopperen’s message to everyone is ‘it’s not too late to get vaccinated. Do it now’, Ms Hum said. Come and visit us at our clinics in Edmonton or Manoora or look out for us popping up around the city and suburbs. Come and have a yarn and get the jab done now.” Said Rachael.
