Is Dining Online Fine?

Well naturally I must say Happy New Year! I’ve never really known when it’s appropriate to stop saying this seasonal pleasantry but I’m pretty sure it’s still safe.

I was sincerely hoping that the use of the ‘C’ Word would not be necessary as we venture into 2022, but COVID is still very much a part of our lives.

As a planet, we are doing it tough, unless you’re an Omicron cell or vaccine manufacturer that is.

My observations of businesses in the Douglas Shire, over the festive period, has filled me with nothing but admiration for owners, management and staff.

Whilst there has been an opportunity to recoup some previously lost income, for many it has been an extremely frustrating and uncertain period. Illness, quarantine, staff shortages, low stock levels and occasional frustrated customers has all added up to a thoroughly stressful few weeks.

Many establishments are shutting their doors not only due to lack of staff, but simply because they are exhausted.

I made another couple of observations during the break.

Firstly, the amazing increase in the number of battery powered scooters whizzing around, which I have to say is a great fun addition for any visitor to our Region.

Secondly and very much out of the blue, is the sudden arrival of ordering your meal or drinks online even once inside your chosen venue.

Although, common place in the Capital Cities, this new way to interact, whilst out and about, has certain benefits. It also, as I see it, has some concerns.

In the current world where close contact is often to be avoided, the ability to order without the use of a human interface makes a lot of sense. As I understand it, eateries and pubs are looking at this technology as a temporary requirement.

My worry is that we may all start to accept this as part of the ‘new norm’ and the personal touch that we love at our favourite restaurant and pub becomes more robotic.

Let’s also spare a thought for our senior citizens and technophobes that still might not even have a Smartphone.

Hopefully we will all soon be able to return to the ‘old norm’ and communicate in the way humans do best…. face to face!!

I’m off to grab my mask, so for now it’s Gazza signing out.
